A WAY FORWARD
On Tuesday September 19th 2006, a military group calling itself the Council for Democratic Reform (“CDR”) seized control of the Thai government and declared martial law. The CDR announced it will appoint a civilian government within two weeks as the first step to returning the country to democratic government. Although the military deployed troops around key government facilities and other strategic locations, there is little visible military presence elsewhere. Furthermore, there have been no indications or reports of any violence at this time. While Tuesday’s military overthrow will probably continue to shake local markets in the short term, the political infighting that had paralysed policymakers for much of the year has now been brought to a head and the CDR roadmap to the next democratic government appears to have won acceptance at high levels. Some might suggest that the way forward is clear for the first time in months.
